Combat & investigation
1666: Amsterdam Combat, Investigation & Witchcraft Guide
The game sells itself on a loop, not a moveset: every facade has a gablestone, every Original has a debt, and every Esbat is a reckoning. Here's how the loop works and what we know about fighting.

Specific spells, enemy types and combat systems will be documented after Early Access. This page intentionally separates confirmed design from what still needs in-game verification.
The loop: investigate, mark, confront
The game's own pitch is the loop: every facade carries a gablestone, every Original has a debt, and every Esbat is a reckoning. Combat is the final act of an investigation, not a standalone encounter system.
Investigation (day)
- Identify the Originals hiding behind human faces among Amsterdam's citizens.
- Mark your targets and gather the information the confrontation will require.
- Read the city — the gablestones are part of the clue layer.
The Esbat (night)
When the moon rises, the marked Originals can be confronted in their true forms. Previews describe strategy, timing and choice as the deciding factors — each target is meant to be approachable multiple ways, including stealth.
Noa's witchcraft and Aaron's cat abilities
Noa commands spellcasting passed down through generations of Zaindaris, powered by the Nux energy the Originals owe. Aaron — a professor's consciousness in a cat's body — plays differently: agility, alternate routes, and access to places Noa can't reach. Switching between them is the game's core dual-protagonist mechanic.
Specific spells, enemy types and difficulty tuning are not confirmed until the EA build. This page will grow a full systems section after launch.
Combat questions
Is 1666: Amsterdam a soulslike?
No. It's marketed as a story-led action-adventure; combat is framed by stealth, investigation and witchcraft rather than stamina-based melee duels.
Is combat the main focus?
No — investigation comes first. Most encounters are meant to be approached with strategy, timing and choice.
How does Noa fight?
She commands witchcraft and spellcasting passed down through generations of Zaindaris, using Nux as the underlying energy.
What can Aaron do in combat?
Aaron is a cat with a different playstyle: agility, alternate routes, and a different perspective on scenes. Full combat capabilities arrive with EA.
What is the Esbat?
The night ritual/confrontation where identified Originals are faced in their true forms under the moon.
Can I play stealthily?
Yes — previews describe action, stealth and investigation working together, with multiple ways to handle each target.
