Prologue & demo
1666: Amsterdam Prologue Guide — Walkthrough & Length
The Prologue is the only playable 1666 content right now, and it's free — a standalone mystery that introduces Nux, the companion choice, and the game's three-era structure before the paid game begins.
Updated Aug 24, 2026 · June build impressions
The Prologue is a separate demo build with no combat: nothing carries into Early Access, and the investigation/Esbat loop only begins in the paid game.
Before you start
- Save slot. New Game prompts you to create a save slot — do it, then move forward.
- Controller recommended. The demo lists full controller support; the steps below use DualSense prompts (R1 / Square / L2 / R2 / X). PC keyboard bindings are not published.
- Hardware check. The demo requires hardware ray tracing and 8 GB VRAM, same as the full game. Crash troubleshooting is at the bottom of this page.
- Energy naming. Official text calls the energy Nux; one walkthrough renders it "Lux." Same resource, different spelling.
Act 1 — Noa's Commencement (1666)
- Walk forward. You control Noa in the woods. Up ahead is a dead animal corpse — the game calls it a Life Echo. (The whispering and atmosphere are intentional.)
- Gather Nux at the Life Echo. Press R1 to reveal Noa, then hold Square to gather energy.
- Light the path. Hold L2 to concentrate, aim at any object with floating red leaves above it, hold R2 to enchant it, then press Square to ignite. A cutscene lights the torches on both sides of the path.
- Reach the Sacred Tree. At the end of the path is a gathering around a leafless tree. The game's title card appears.
- Ignite the braziers. Hold Square at the Life Echo to gather Nux again. Hold L2, aim at the brazier on the left, hold R2, then press Square to ignite all the braziers around the tree. Press Square when prompted to "enliven."
- Analyze the tree. Hold L2 to aim at the tree, hold R2 to analyze, and learn about the cats in the branches.
- Choose your companion. Pick a cat — see the list below.
Choose your companion (the cats)
The cats are called Bateratze — the game doesn't spell out what that means yet. Player reports say the chosen cat follows the protagonist and will matter to gameplay. In the Prologue itself, the choice has no gameplay difference; it only changes the name, flavor text and the closing scene.
| Cat | Flavor text (official) |
|---|---|
| The Spirit | A whisper from across the void, a touch from the netherworld. The Spirit holds so many secrets… |
| The Hermit | Its gaze reflects thoughts roaming the span of the universe, seeking eternal truths and knowledge. |
| The Dreamer | Dances on the swirls and twirls of otherworldly currents, going down an ever-changing path nobody else can understand. |
| The Wildling | Sounds of rain and wind in foliage. Smells of soil and trees. Its heart beats as one with the natural order. |
| The Guardian | To stand and be true, to rise against the tide. Stalwart in the face of challenges, holding strong to its duties. |
| The Alchemist | Connected to the elements, in tune with the constant changes of the world. Transmutation of crude to noble its sole purpose. |
| The Child | Radiates innocence. A powerful urge to smell and see everything, to climb and crawl into every nook, all with an open heart. |
| The Page | Compelled to head out into the world, with joy and pride. Aims to learn and grow, for only through the journey may it reach its full potential. |
| The Knight | Stands straight and strong. Eyes shine with courage and virtue. Calls to mind the Kings, the Just, and the Mighty. |
Coverage mentions "ten-plus" options; the nine above are the documented ones. No walkthrough has found a difference between them inside the demo.
Act 2 — The Library (present day)
You now play Clio, daughter of Aaron Long-Smith, visiting Professor Lucas.
- Talk to the Professor. Take the stairs up and speak to him.
- Go to the fireplace desk. Go back downstairs to the desk by the fireplace and talk to the Professor again.
- Find Section VI. The shelf section to your left, closest to the Professor's table, is Section VI — Ancient Writing Systems and Languages. Hold L2 to concentrate, aim at the roman numeral, hold R2 to analyze.
- Take the book. Go to the shelf and look near the books. Hold Square when prompted, then press X to pick up the book with the next clue.
- Return to the Professor. Talk to him to advance the cutscene.
- Section XIV and Rembrandt. Take the stairs to the floor above. The section directly above the Professor's desk is Section XIV. Interact with Rembrandt's bust and take the note.
- Deliver the note. Go back down and give it to the Professor.
Stuck here? The two easy misses are the Section VI shelf (left of the fireplace desk, downstairs) and Section XIV (upstairs, directly above the desk, on Rembrandt's bust).
Act 3 — New Year's Eve 1999
Flashback: you control Aaron with Agnes (Clio's mother) heading to their Amsterdam hotel room on New Year's Eve into 2000.
- Follow the path. It's linear — floating text markers show you're on the right route to the elevator that leads to the room.
- Gather the three relics. Hold Square and press X when prompted at each of these exact spots:
- Dry Leaves — the shelf on your left.
- Four Candles — the wooden chest straight ahead of the doorway.
- Tapestry — the bag on the sofa to the right of the chest.
- The transformation. After the cutscene you play as the cat. The path is linear; press X to jump up and down at prompted structures.
- Through the red gate. It leads back to the Sacred Tree — time is paused at the moment you chose your cat. Analyze the tree and the red-hooded figure; you learn her name is Noa, The Collector.
- Climb the branch. Go to the other side of the tree. Floating letters hover above a branch: go near it, press X to jump up, climb right, then go down the branch.
- Finish. Press X near the bluish afterimage to complete the Prologue.
Ending and teaser
The Prologue ends right as the mystery lands: the cat you chose is Aaron, Clio's father, now bound as the witch's companion. A post-demo teaser shows the cat's traversal gameplay and action-oriented witch combat from the full game. Nothing from the demo carries into Early Access.
Controls quick reference (DualSense)
| Action | Input |
|---|---|
| Reveal Noa | R1 |
| Gather Nux / enliven / ignite | Hold Square |
| Concentrate / aim | Hold L2 |
| Enchant / analyze | Hold R2 |
| Interact / jump / pick up | X |
Prompts are also shown on screen during each scene, so the table is a fallback — not something you need to memorize.
Length and replay
Officially about 30 minutes; HowLongToBeat players average ~42 minutes for the main story. A second run to see another cat's closing scene takes only a few minutes once you know the path.
Stuck? Problems and fixes
- Can't gather energy. You must press R1 to reveal Noa first, then hold Square at the Life Echo.
- Nothing to enchant. Only objects with floating red leaves above them take the enchant — look for the leaves.
- Can't find a library section. Section VI is the shelf left of the fireplace desk (downstairs); Section XIV is upstairs directly above the desk, on Rembrandt's bust.
- Missing a relic in the hotel. Dry Leaves = left shelf · Four Candles = wooden chest ahead · Tapestry = bag on the sofa.
- Can't finish the cat climb. The floating letters mark the branch: jump up there, climb right, then go down the branch to the bluish afterimage.
- Crashing. Reported on borderline GPUs. Check your VRAM against the 8 GB ray-tracing floor first; there's no official fix list yet.
- Steam Deck? Not supported — the demo shares the full game's ray-tracing requirement. See the Steam Deck page.
Reception and known issues
- Steam rating: "Mixed" (~53% positive out of 1,000+ reviews at last check). Praise: atmosphere and the cat segment. Criticism: slow pacing, dated walking/interaction, no combat or payoff.
- AI assets: players flagged AI-generated images in the June build; the studio apologized. Coverage reports the full game will not use AI art.

Prologue questions
Is the 1666: Amsterdam Prologue free?
Yes. It's a free demo on Steam and the Epic Games Store, released June 5, 2026.
How long is the Prologue?
Officially about 30 minutes. HowLongToBeat users average ~42 minutes for the main story.
What happens in the Prologue?
Three acts: Noa's Commencement in 1666 (light the path fires, meet the cats, choose a companion); a present-day library search as Clio, whose father left a letter she can't read; and a 1999 New Year's Eve where her father Aaron is turned into a cat. The chosen cat is revealed to be Aaron, bound as the witch's companion.
What is the companion choice?
Early in the 1666 act you pick one of ten-plus black cats at the ritual tree — they have different names (Knight, Child, Hermit, etc.) and flavor text. The one you pick is later revealed to be Aaron, Clio's father. Whether the choice changes the full game is unknown.
Do the different cats matter?
In the Prologue they only change the name/flavor and the closing scene. Panache has not said whether the companion choice affects the full campaign.
What are all the companion cats?
Nine are documented with flavor text: The Spirit, The Hermit, The Dreamer, The Wildling, The Guardian, The Alchemist, The Child, The Page, and The Knight. Coverage mentions ten-plus options; none changes gameplay inside the demo.
What is a Bateratze?
The game's term for the companion cat and its bond. The Prologue never defines it; players infer the chosen cat follows the protagonist and will matter in the full game.
Where are the three relics in the hotel room?
Dry Leaves are on the left shelf, Four Candles are in the wooden chest straight ahead of the doorway, and the Tapestry is in the bag on the sofa to the right of the chest.
How do I get through the library section?
Talk to the professor, go downstairs to the fireplace desk, analyze Section VI (left shelf) and take the book, then go upstairs, take the note from Rembrandt's bust in Section XIV, and deliver it.
Is there combat in the Prologue?
No. The demo is narrative and exploration-only; the ending teaser shows combat from the full game.
What are the three timelines?
1666 (Noa's ceremony), the present day (Clio and a professor in his library), and 1999 (Aaron's New Year's Eve that turns him into a cat).
Does Prologue progress carry into Early Access?
No confirmed transfer. The Prologue is a standalone build that ends before the main gameplay loop begins.
Can I play the Prologue on PS5 or Xbox?
No. The Prologue is PC-only on Steam and Epic, matching the Early Access platforms.
Is the Prologue any good?
It currently sits at a 'Mixed' Steam rating (~53% positive). Players praise the atmosphere and the cat segment but criticize slow pacing, dated walking/interaction and the lack of combat or payoff.
Is the Prologue crashing for anyone?
Some players reported crashes on the June build, especially on borderline GPUs. Because the build requires hardware ray tracing, check your VRAM first; there is no official fix list yet.
Why are people talking about AI assets in the Prologue?
Players flagged AI-generated images in the June build; the studio acknowledged and apologized. Coverage reports the full game will not use AI art, and the Steam page lists an 'Artificial Intelligence' tag.
