The game is set in 1666 Amsterdam — the same era as its 2010 pitch — but it is a separate universe. AC Hexe is a different game entirely, made by Ubisoft.

The setting: Amsterdam, 1666

A city built on wealth, power and sheer will — now fueled by a sinister force it did not forge. The game's Amsterdam is handcrafted and open, with two faces: the prosperous Golden Age city by day, and something older beneath its surface at night.

The Originals and Nux

The Originals are entities that have lived for centuries, granted time, power, and the freedom to abuse both. That power is now owed. Noa's job as The Collector is to identify them, mark them, and — when the Esbat comes — confront them and take back what they owe: Nux, the spiritual energy that also powers her witchcraft.

Gablestones

Every canal-house facade carries a gablestone. In the game, not all of them tell the truth — they are part of the investigation layer that separates appearance from reality in 1666 Amsterdam.

Is it Assassin's Creed? (No.)

The confusion is earned: 1666 was originally pitched at Ubisoft around 2010 by Patrice Désilets, co-creator of Assassin's Creed. It was shelved, rights reverted in 2016, and it is now an original IP from Panache Digital Games. It shares nothing with Assassin's Creed Hexe beyond a period mood.

The developers describe intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, nudity and strong language — useful context for the "parents guide" searches the game is already attracting.

Lore questions

Is 1666: Amsterdam an Assassin's Creed game?

No. It's an original IP by Patrice Désilets (co-creator of Assassin's Creed). It was originally pitched at Ubisoft around 2010, cancelled, and the rights reverted to Désilets in 2016.

Is it related to Assassin's Creed Hexe?

No. AC Hexe is Ubisoft's own witchcraft-era project. The games share a period mood, not a universe or developer.

What are gablestones?

The decorated stone plaques on Amsterdam canal houses. In the game, every facade carries one, and not all of them tell the truth — they're part of the investigation layer.

What is Nux?

The spiritual energy the Originals have taken and abused. Noa's job as Collector is to take it back — it also powers her witchcraft.

Is it historically accurate?

The setting is a supernatural alternate-history Amsterdam; the witch-trial era and city atmosphere are real, the Originals are not.

Why has the game taken 15+ years?

1666 was pitched at Ubisoft around 2010, cancelled, stuck in legal limbo, then reclaimed by Désilets in 2016. Panache began full development around 2020 and re-revealed it at Summer Game Fest in June 2026.
